2101 L Street, Northwest
Washington, DC
As Project Manager with WDG Architects, I led the dramatic transformation of 2101 L Street, designing the floor plans and coordinating extensively with WDG's Design Architect, Interior Designer, and consulting engineers to reimagine this early 1980s commercial building. The project stripped away the original facade while preserving the concrete structural frame, creating one of downtown Washington's first glass-dominated curtain wall buildings of the modern era.
Working within exceptionally tight constraints - only five inches separated the existing structural slabs from the street front property lines - we developed a sophisticated architectural hierarchy through the primary street facades' pristine, custom-designed white metal unitized curtain wall. The design establishes distinct zones through refined layers of metal and glass: a retail base crowned by a delicate cantilevered glass signage band, a carefully articulated middle section, and a bold top floor where a deep metal-clad horizontal cornice hovers above the roofline, highlighting an exceptional rooftop amenity deck.
The building's transformation has attracted design-conscious tenants including Cassidy Turley Real Estate Services, RTKL Architects, and the US Green Building Council, whose headquarters achieved LEED Platinum certification. The minimalist common spaces feature hand-picked Carrera marble panels and stainless steel accents, giving the lobby an airy, reflective quality that reflects the creative, forward-thinking character of its occupants.
